Are Garfish on the menu for bass?

What do bass consider prey? We know they will take many different fish and crusteaceans . . . crabs, small fish (big fish), etcetera . . . but where do they draw the line. Mackerel, gobies and small pollack are all fair game for bass – but what about garfish. More specifically . . . will they take lures that imitate garfish. And how do you test the theory with any certainty?

I’ve got two of the smaller ones (lures) at home . . . as I’ve been intending to try them out on our bass. Trouble is if I don’t get a ‘hit’ does that mean the lure isn’t any good . . . or there just weren’t any bass about.
